Chapter Twenty-Nine

Meeting Maggie

Sarah

As I stepped into Deborah the hypnotherapist’s office, the words “oasis of peace” popped into my mind. I’d been half-expecting strings of crystal beads and gaudy velvet curtains. Instead, there were lush standing plants in all four corners of the room. On a side table, a fountain with a bamboo spout gurgled soothingly over a bed of stones. My body immediately relaxed, and my lungs expanded to fill the newfound space.

Deborah pointed to a recliner chair with a midnight-blue, plush blanket draped over it. I settled into it in the upright position so I could better take in my surroundings and turned my attention to the hypnotherapist.

She was perhaps in her late sixties or early seventies. Long, silvery hair cascaded in waves down her back. Her face was weathered and kind, with wrinkles that accentuated her smile. She made me think of an older Galadriel, had the Elven queen been human and capable of aging. I almost wanted to peek behind her hair to see if she had pointed ears. Her amber eyes watched me patiently as I observed her.

Smiling, she finally asked, “So, Sarah, what can I help you with today?” Her voice was both low and lilting, resounding inside of me like the vibrations of a Tibetan bowl.

I told her about the recurrent nightmares and the automatic writing which had led me to know a little more about Maggie.

“After that first time, I think I might have shut down access to her, except in my dreams. That initial sense of sexual assault was overwhelming, and I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to go back to work if I left myself open to what was coming through. But my worst fears happened anyway, and now I think it might be because I was avoiding exploring her too closely.”

I described what I’d dreamt the night before the assessment and the sense I’d had that I was too late for something.

“I don’t really know how hypnotherapy works, and maybe you can describe the process a little more, but it now feels imperative to my healing that I try to ‘meet’ Maggie, this dream self, in a setting where I’m awake and can interact with her. I need to know more about her life, understand better what she wants of me, or what she’s trying to tell me …”

“In general, I find it’s better for you to experience it than for me to try to explain how it works, as that is only going to activate the cognitive mind, which tends to be a skeptic. But I’m happy to answer any questions you have.”

I found I had few questions, and even my nemesis was quiet. The humility of defeat had silenced my snark, it seemed. I was ready to let go of control and listen to my subconscious. Or so I told myself.

Deborah smiled slightly and began, “Okay, let’s get started then. But remember, Sarah, this is your session, and you’re in charge. If you feel a little uncomfortable, know that you are safe and guided.
